touchstone – noun
In the fifteenth century, a hard black stone called a touchstone was used to test the quality or purity of gold by comparing the color of the streak produced on it with that of a standard gold specimen of know high quality.
In the figurative sense, the term touchstone has come to denote a standard, a measure of excellence, a model, a test for the quality of something, against which other things can be evaluated.
